HIKING THE VIEWPOINTS IN AMAZING VANG VIENG ADVENTURES

AMAZING VANG VIENG ADVENTURES

Nam Xay Viewpoint (aka motorbike peak) provides the opportunity for an interesting selfie.

THE VIEWPOINTS: Several viewpoints crown the peaks west of the Nam Song River, and two of the most intriguing lie about 10 km from Vang Vieng: NAM XAY and HORKHAM PEAKS. Although these neighboring peaks sit close together, they seem to compete for attention with UNUSUAL SUMMIT FEATURES.

MOTORBIKE PEAK: Nam Xay, often called “Motorbike Peak,” features an OLD MOTORBIKE at its apex, so you can CLIMB ABOARD, frame the jungle-clad landscape behind you, and snap a selfie to remember the moment; as of May 2026, you pay 30,000 Laotian Kip to access the viewpoint.

AMAZING VANG VIENG ADVENTURES

Horkham Viewpoint (aka airplane peak) is another interesting hike with a small airplane on the summit.

AIRPLANE PEAK: If you continue just 1 km further along the same road, HORKHAM PEAK quietly delivers an even more rewarding adventure. Here, after paying the same 30,000 Kip (about US$1.50), you can HIKE TWO SEPARATE PEAKS and detour into a SMALL CAVE that penetrates roughly 100 meters before you turn around and exit the same way.

TWO PEAKS: From the cave, a short walk leads to a trail fork where you choose between the higher and more popular “Airplane Peak” on the LEFT or “Pegasus Peak” on the RIGHT. Airplane Peak demands a steep ascent from the fork, yet the effort pays off when a small ALUMINIUM AIRPLANE comes into view just below the SUMMIT, and from that vantage point you can gaze across the valley to the distant PEGASUS STATUE perched on the opposite peak.

SWIMMING AT THE BLUE LAGOON’S IN AMAZING VANG VIENG ADVENTURES

AMAZING VANG VIENG ADVENTURES

Blue lagoon # 3 is surrounded by spectacular scenery.

THE BLUE LAGOONS: When the heat and humidity crank up in Vang Vieng, you can cool off at a string of SPRING FED BLUE LAGOONS scattered along the WESTERN SIDE of the Nam Song River, each with its own charm and adventure.

BLUE LAGOON # 1: This popular swimming site sits just 7 km from town and draws the BIGGEST CROWDS, as the original spot.

BLUE LAGOON # 2: Many travelers rank this as the top choice for scenery, ambiance, and sheer size. With a main pool roughly four times larger than Lagoon #1, and an entry fee of 30,000 Laotian Kip (about US$1.50) as of May 2026. You can swing from ropes, ride a flying fox, or leap from diving platforms at both lagoons, then relax at the onsite restaurants and cafés if you decide to stay all day.

AMAZING VANG VIENG ADVENTURES

Blue Lagoon # 2 is considered Vang Vieng’s best swimming location.

BLUE LAGOON # 3: If you want a more TRANQUIL ESCAPE, head 16 km west to Blue Lagoon #3, arguably the MOST PICTURESQUE of the bunch, where CLEAR WATER reflects a towering jungle-covered karst peak. Fish glide beneath the surface, and a TOWER on the far shore offers a SWING ROPE, FLYING FOX, and JUMP PLATFORM.

VIEWPOINTS: Here, you can also follow TRAILS to VIEWPOINTS and SMALL CAVES before rinsing off at the showers and grabbing a meal at the restaurant, all for the same 30,000 Kip entry fee.

BLUE LAGOON # 4: Alternatively, you can venture 18 km north to the least-visited Blue Lagoon #4, tucked against another limestone peak and usually included in tours to WATER CAVE, SANG THONG CAVE, and SANG HOI CAVE; after driving 1 km along a dirt road from the Sang Thong Cave turn-off, you can enjoy a quieter lagoon scene with a swing rope, flying fox, and simple restaurant for just 20,000 Kip (about US$1).

Sang Thong Cave is developed show cave, located 18 km north of Vang Vieng.

CAVING ACTIVITIES: Vang Vieng offers several caves that combine natural beauty with easy adventure. Many travelers start with WATER CAVES that mix tubing fun with underground exploration. Local operators fix ropes through the passages so you can haul yourself along on inflated truck tubes.

POUKHAM CAVE: For sheer scale and FORMATIONS, Phoukham Cave at Blue Lagoon #1 delivers the most SPECTACULAR experience. You reach the entrance via a 120 meter stairway on the far side of the lagoon. Inside the first CHAMBER, a RECLINING BUDDHA creates an atmospheric welcome. From here, a metal walkway and bridges lead about 400 METERS through rooms packed with ILLUMINATED FORMATIONS. You pay the Blue Lagoon #1 entry fee of 30,000 Kip to visit this cave.

WATER CAVE: This usually comes first and features a stream that flows through the main passage. As of May 2026, entry costs 40,000 Kip.

TWO CAVES: SANG THONG CAVE, near Water Cave, now functions as a beautifully lit show cave. A smooth path and MOTION SENSOR LIGHTS guide you about 250 meters past superb STALACTITES and STALAGMITES.

ADVENTURE CAVE: For wilder exploration, SANG HOI CAVE offers an UNDEVELOPED RIVER PASSAGE about 200 meters further north. You follow arrow markers almost TWO KILOMETERS to an UNDERGROUND RIVER through mostly easy, flat tunnels. Expect several low ceilings, OUTSTANDING FORMATIONS near the end, an entry fee of 40,000 Kip, and darkness. Wear sturdy shoes, carry reliable lights, and consider hiring an experienced local guide.
