Thalang Village: A Scenic Rest Stop

The Nakai Plateau: Situated in Khammouane Province, Thalang Village is traditionally the first overnight stop for loopers. Located on the Nakai Plateau, Thalang offers stunning lake views, remnants of inundated forests caused by the Nam Thuen Dam. 1. Flooded Forest Viewpoint (16 km north of Thalang on Hwy 1E):

Exploring The Flooded Forest on Hwy 1E

The Flooded Forest Viewpoint: Approximately 16 km north of Thalang is a viewpoint called the Flooded Forest. It’s an elevated stretch of road where the waters of the dam can be seen on both sides. On the western side dead trees, like white skeletons, protrude from the wide expanse of water. Note: This is right on the provincial border of Khammoune and Bolikhamsai. There’s a checkpoint and boom gate there.

Karst Landscape: The terrain in Bolikhamsai Province is significantly Karst (sedimentary limestone) and as such, has plenty of caves for exploration. A lot of the Karst on the loop circuit is in the shape of high jagged peaks, with dramatic vertical cliff faces. A good example of this is near the town of LAK SAO, where the road runs parallel to a dramatic cliff line for a few km. 

A refreshing break on the Thakhek Loop

Cold Springs (aka Cool Pool): Is one of the most popular attractions on the loop trip. The turn off is a further 18 km beyond the Dragon Cave. There’s a large advertising sign on the right of hwy 8. From there, it’s an additional 4.5 km of dirt road to the parking area. As of January 2020 the entry fee is 20k LAK person. Visitors are also required to pay a motorbike parking fee of 5k LAK. The primary attraction is the clear, turquoise waters of the Cool Pool. It’s a spring fed natural pool where Looper’s can cool off after the heat of the 90 km ride from Thalang. It’s a great spot to relax and chill out at, while swimming and taking in the surrounding scenery.

Unique Namkading River Attractions – Visiting The Bomb Boats

The Bomb Boats: An interesting attraction, worth a few minutes of your time is on the Namkading River, next to Ta Bak Village. Pull over at the western end of the bridge and, below on the river, you’ll see the BOMB BOATS. According to informed sources these boats are actually constructed from auxiliary fuel tanks, from US Air-force planes, which were dropped after the fuel was used. They fuel tanks are much longer than the cluster bomb casings that are often seen in this area of Laos.

• Accommodation and Meals: In Thalang, both Sabaidee Thalang Guesthouse and Posey Thalang offer affordable lodging. The buffet meals at Sabaidee provide a hearty end to a day of exploration.
• Travel Caution: If visiting during rainy season, ensure you have an off-road bike for more challenging segments like the path to Cool Pool. Leave early from the pool to avoid navigating tricky roads to Kong Lor in the dark.
