EXPLORING SAIGON’S WAR HISTORY: IN AND AROUND SAIGON

These two tanks were used to crash through the gates of Independence Palace on the final day of the conflict
War History: During the WAR YEARS (1965–1975), SAIGON (aka HO CHI MINH CITY) served as the capital for the REPUBLICAN FORCES and the US MILITARY and sat at the heart of a COMPLEX and BRUTAL CONFLICT. Although their MAIN ENEMY advanced from the NORTH, fierce FIGHTING also erupted throughout the SOUTH and in areas close to SAIGON. Largely because many LOCAL COMMUNITIES pledged ALLEGIANCE to the NORTHERN FORCES.

The Viet Cong: Locals knew these fighters as the VIET CONG (VC), and in most cases they lived as FARMERS in RURAL DISTRICTS just outside the city. As a result, the Republican Army and US Military OFTEN CLASHED with the VIET CONG only a short distance from Saigon’s URBAN PRECINCTS. These clashes turned seemingly QUIET COUNTRYSIDE into some of the war’s most CONTESTED GROUND.

War History Sites: During the war years, the VIET CONG often took shelter in INTRICATE TUNNEL SYSTEMS that CONCEALED their movements and challenged any any ATTEMPT TO PENETRATE THEIR DEFENCES. Powerful evidence of this can be seen at the CU CHI TUNNELS, just a short journey WEST of Saigon. Furthermore, another KEY SITE of VC ACTIVITY hides deep within the MANGROVES of the CAN GIO BIOSPHERE (also known as MONKEY ISLAND), where DENSE JUNGLE once provided an almost IMPENETRABLE NATURAL SHIELD.

City Sites: Meanwhile, WITHIN THE CITY itself, you can EXPLORE plenty of TANGIBLE REMINDERS of this turbulent period. The WAR REMNANTS MUSEUM and the INDEPENDENCE PALACE both showcase excellent DISPLAYS of MILITARY HARDWARE and detailed EXHIBITS that bring the HISTORY of these EVENTS into sharp focus.
