Journey to Kbal Spean Jungle Ruins: The River of a Thousand Lingas

Getting There:

Access to Kbal Spean is most convenient via a guided tour or independently by motorbike from Siem Reap, but note that an Angkor Pass is required for entry. The adventure begins with a short hike, approximately 1.5 km, through lush jungle landscapes, leading you to the heart of this historical site.

The Jungle Trail:

The well-marked trail from the parking area leads you steadily uphill for the first 800 meters. The hike, typically a 30-minute journey, culminates at the top of the waterfalls, where intricate Hindu rock carvings await. However, if visiting during the rainy season, high water levels may obscure the carvings.

The Thousand Lingas:

Moving along the riverside trail, you’ll descend to the lower level where the ancient Lingam carvings are etched into the riverbed. Complete your visit with a descent down a wooden stairway to the main waterfall, a serene spot to reflect on the storied past.

Plan your tour in the morning to enjoy the cooler hours, as the site lacks shade.

Cambodia Land Mine Museum: A Modern Reflection

On your return journey from Bantaey Srei, a stop at the Cambodia Land Mine Museum offers a poignant reflection on recent history. Located 28 km north of Siem Reap on Route #67, the museum charges a $5 USD entry fee. Founded in 2007 by landmine clearer Mr. Aki Ra, the museum houses over 50,000 deactivated landmines and other ordnance. Informative placards detail Mr. Ra’s efforts and ongoing mission to make Cambodia safer—a humble tribute to human resilience and courage.
