Journey to Xe Bangfai River Cave
Thakhek to Bualapha: For those starting their adventure in Thakhek, traveling to Bualapha remains a rugged endeavor. The roads from Highway #12 present long stretches of dirt, riddled with potholes and ruts. An alternate route, historically preferred, through Nongchan, now faces challenges due to constant heavy truck traffic from nearby iron ore mines. Instead, it is advisable to take the road branching off at Mahaxay, passing through Xaybuathong. This route offers a smoother experience, with 30 km of tarmac now connecting Xaybuathong to Bualapha.

An extension to the Thakhek Loop: Visitors can easily integrate the Xe Bangfai Cave excursion into their itinerary, especially if exploring the renowned Thakhek Loop. Notably, this region bears historical significance, having once been traversed by the Ho Chi Minh Trail and consequently subjected to heavy bombardment. The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is actively involved in clearing unexploded ordnance from local farmlands.

River Crossing: An intriguing highlight on the way to the cave is the Pakpanang Crossing over the Xe Bangfai River, where a failed concrete bridge project forces vehicles to cross via a traditional ferry—a large wooden raft powered by an outboard motor.
Note: For anyone with the time and budget to do the three day tour to Xe Bangfai Cave with GREEN DISCOVERY LAOS, a motorized boat will take you from this crossing up to the cave entrance. It’s a fantastic two hour trip along the Xe Bangfai River.
